Solar Power Systems for Ports and Terminals

The concept of solar-powered mooring dolphins was first explored in 2013 when a major port authority asked Straatman to find a way to power capstans without relying on cables, particularly for dolphins located in open water. Working closely with the port authority, we developed a solar panel-based solution.

After a successful pilot project in 2014, the design was refined for easier installation and a more compact size. Working lights and navigation lights were also integrated. This second-generation design was adopted by the Port of Rotterdam, and since then, Straatman has delivered solar-powered systems to ports and terminals worldwide.

Benefits of Solar-Powered Systems for Ports and Terminals
  • Continuous Power Supply – Reliable energy availability at all times.
  • No Cable Damage – Eliminates issues caused by anchors or dredgers.
  • Avoid Costly Cable Laying – No need for expensive and risky underwater cabling.
  • Faster Installation – Reduces lead time for constructing dolphins and berths.
  • Low Maintenance – Minimal upkeep required.
  • High Reliability – Durable systems built for harsh marine environments.
  • Energy Cost Savings – Efficient, sustainable power reduces operational costs.
  • Environmental Contribution – Green energy solution with low impact.
  • Enhanced Safety – Minimizes electrical hazards.
  • Flexible Installation – Powers electrical units in locations without traditional electricity supply.
