Okan Wood
Explore the natural beauty and versatility of Okan wood. Its rich golden-brown heartwood and exceptional properties make it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. From hydraulic engineering projects to decorative turned items, Okan combines durability, strength, and a warm, inviting color that enhances any project.
Applications
The heartwood of Okan wood ranges from yellow to golden brown, often with an olive-green tint that gradually turns reddish-brown when exposed to light. Its growth rings are clearly visible on the end grain, highlighted by darker lines, while the light pink sapwood measures 50–75 mm in width. Okan is classified as quality class 3/Tropical (NEN 5493) and falls under strength class D40 (NEN 5493; 2010).
Thanks to its exceptional durability, Okan wood is ideal for outdoor applications, particularly in hydraulic engineering projects such as lock gates, sheet piling, piles, harbor works, and bridge substructures. It is also suited for demanding structural uses, including sleepers, heavy constructions, and industrial flooring. Beyond its strength, Okan’s warm, golden tones make it a popular choice for decorative turned items. In Great Britain, it is even used as a sustainable alternative to Demerara Green Heart.
Editability
Working with Okan wood can be challenging due to the varying grain pattern and high density. It has a dulling effect on tools. For a smooth surface when planing, a 10 degree cutting edge is required. Okan turns well and can be finished smoothly.
