Meranti is a distinctive wood known for its rich variety of colors, ranging from deep brown to light brown, and from soft pink to warm reddish tones. Sourced from various species within the Shorea genus, Meranti offers a captivating blend of colors and textures, making it a versatile and visually appealing choice for a wide range of applications.

Applications

Meranti, sourced from several species within the Shorea genus, is celebrated for its wide range of color variations. The heartwood spans from dark brown to light brown and from pale pink to reddish tones, while the broad sapwood, with its pink-gray hue, creates a striking contrast. Quarter-sawn cuts can reveal a beautiful striped pattern due to the light cross grain, and faint whitish lines—formed by tangentially arranged resin channels—may appear on the surface. These lines do not affect clear lacquer finishes, as they absorb the coating and become virtually invisible. Unlike woods such as Keruing, Meranti is not resinous. Small wormholes, or pinholes, may occur but pose no risk to properly sawn and dried wood.

Meranti is highly versatile, suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, including furniture, carpentry, window frames, doors, paneling, skirting boards, stairs, and more. Its veneer is also widely used in the production of plywood, making it a preferred choice for a variety of projects.

Meranti’s machinability is excellent, both with hand tools and by machine. Although there is some variation between the different types, the degree of workability depends mainly on the bulk density. When planing cross-grained wood, it is recommended to use a cutting angle of 20 degrees to prevent raised fibers
