Abachi Wood
Lightweight, Versatile Tropical Wood
Abachi wood comes from the Abachi tree (Triplochiton scleroxylon), a light and soft tropical wood native to West Africa. Its low density, fine grain, and excellent workability make it ideal for applications where light weight, insulation, and a smooth finish are key.
Abachi is widely used in sauna construction, furniture making, and other projects where ease of handling and performance matter. Explore its properties, practical uses, and why it’s a preferred choice for designers and builders alike.
Lightweight and Easy to Work With
Abachi, also known as Ayous, is a lightweight tropical wood with a pale yellow hue and a characteristic scent. Fresh heartwood ranges from whitish to creamy yellow and gradually deepens to a warm golden yellow when exposed to light. The sapwood and heartwood are not sharply distinguished, and the grain varies from moderate to coarse.
Thanks to its excellent thermal properties, Abachi is ideal for sauna construction, furniture making, interior components, wall and ceiling paneling, and model making for metal foundries. Its light weight also makes it a preferred material in yacht building.
Key Benefits:
- Extremely light and easy to process
- Splinter-free – perfect for saunas and direct skin contact
